When Guilty Gear Xrd first released, it was quite exciting. Not only was a beloved fighting game back with new characters, story, mechanics and look, it also made one of the most complex, but rewarding, fighting games more accessible. With these ideas in mind, Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator- tries to take it a step further. With new characters, story and more, is Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator- the next must have game or is it a glorified re-release?

Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator- takes place after the events of the first game, making it hard for newcomers to get what’s going on. In addition to being confusing for some, the story, much like the original Guilty Gear Xrd, is just a series of cutscenes. This means there is nothing to do besides enjoy the story, which is nice if you’re interesting, but can be boring if you were looking for some fights to break up the story.

As for the actual story, it’s actually pretty interesting, even if it is on the short side. There are a fair number of twists and turns, plus some fairly big things that go down. Naturally your enjoyment will hinge off your interest in the characters, but overall it should appeal to people.

To go along with the story, there is an arcade mode called episode, which is a cross between arcade and story. Here you get to fight eight enemies and experience events that aren’t told in the story and expand on what’s being told.

While this is great, its clear that Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator-‘s main focus is multiplayer, resulting in a fairly light single player/VS AI experience. M.O.M. mode is now little more than versus with RPG mechanics, with the remaining modes being training and versus.
